Have you ever met someone and immediately felt like you could be friends? That’s how I felt about Joan when I met her and her family for an early morning portrait at the end of July. We had been emailing back and forth for a few weeks, planning the when and the where and the how, but as soon as I put a face to her name I felt like I was about to photograph someone I’d known for much longer.
Before I knew it, small kids and tall kids and sons and daughters were spilling out of each vehicle. I had been a little worried about suggesting such an early start time for a family of fifteen, but it was clear after only a few minutes that my worry wasn’t merited. They were happy to all be together in the hills, and the time of day just didn’t matter.
Joan and Bill, (and every single last one of you), thank you so much for asking me to photograph your family in the Black Hills, and for trusting me from a distance. I hope your vacation together was absolutely perfect.
