Kelly & Joel: Black Hills Engagement Photography

After literally months of trying to get together for engagement pictures, Kelly, Joel and I were finally in the same place at the same time. And on top of that, the weather decided to be not only agreeable, but completely perfect. Their wedding is coming up fast, and it was our last chance to make it work. And that’s just what we did.

We hung around at Roughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon, dodging other visitors and trying to talk over the sound of the water. I felt like I was yelling the entire time, but was thankful for the opportunity to get to know Joel and Kelly better. Not only are they beautiful, but kind and easy-going as well. Joel works in Gillete with explosives — but don’t worry — it’s not as dangerous as it sounds. (There’s much more to it than that, but he can explain it better than I can.) Kelly is a nurse, and a good one I’m sure, based on her thoughtful nature.

Joel showed me the exact spot where he proposed, and Kelly smiled at the memory. He said it was a bit of a different scene at that time, with a foot of snow on the walkway and not another soul in sight. He pointed to where he placed the timed camera to catch the moment, and they laughed as they recalled her being upset with him because he was about to ruin the picture. She didn’t realize he was getting on one knee.

Kelly and Joel, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedules to meet. I can’t wait for your wedding (17 days!) and hope you’re enjoying every last minute of your engagement. Here are a few of my favorites!
