This is Derek and Melody, and they’re especially adorable. During our first meeting this summer, it didn’t take long for me to become smitten with the idea of photographing their wedding, and working with them for engagement photos didn’t disappoint.
Derek and Melody, thank you for this lovely afternoon and for making me feel extra lucky to do what I do! In addition to those things, thank you for choosing a day after the first snow, making fall in Spearfish Canyon look as pretty as ever. Enjoy a few of my favorites! —js

Melody, what is your favorite thing about Derek?
My favorite thing about Derek is definitely his authenticity. From the first time we hung out, our conversations were real and honest, and he struck me as not afraid to be himself, even with a girl he barely knew. He is a good, strong man, and it’s clear to anyone who knows him. Also, as a total side note, he has this ridiculous metabolism and just literally gives off heat all the time. Since I’m someone who gets cold easily and often, that is kind of the best.
You knew you’d marry him when…
When Derek and I decided to start a relationship, we knew that we were both serious about it…so the eventuality of marriage was, honestly, always in the back of my mind. But I think I knew I’d marry him about the time I decided to move back to South Dakota to be with him. Although I grew up in South Dakota, when we met I was headed off to grad school in Eugene, Oregon with absolutely no plan of returning to South Dakota EVER. As our relationship started and progressed, I realized that moving back was becoming a totally real possibility. It was a real process to make that decision, but at the same time it was easy because suddenly there wasn’t anything I wanted more. I was pretty sure he was a keeper all along, but when I found myself talking (happily!) about moving back to South Dakota after graduation, I knew.
Derek, what’s your favorite thing about Melody?
My favorite thing about Melody is the cute little smile she gets on her face when I walk into the room. From the first time we met to this morning it hasn’t changed or faded.
You knew you’d marry her when…
I realized I wanted to marry Melody on a day I was thinking about my future, and couldn’t imagine anyone but her being a part of it.
