Nathan and Mary are from North Dakota, and I didn’t get the chance to meet them before their wedding day. I like to get to know my couples throughout their engagement with meetings, phone conversations and a photo session. Because we didn’t already have the kind of connection that comes with meeting face-to-face, I was secretly feeling a little nervous about jumping right into photographing them. Would their love for one another be blatant or subdued, deafening or quiet? I wanted to be able to capture them — however they may be — purely and accurately.
I asked them how they met. Nathan happily explained that it was through a mutual friend. He followed the first statement with a second—that as soon as he laid eyes on her, he knew he wanted to see a lot more of Mary. And just like that, my worries disappeared. Their love came across strong and dignified. Focused and diliberate. Joyful. Peaceful. And absolutely real.
